FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., November 1, 2007 - A 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Soldier died Wednesday in Tikrit, Iraq, from injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle north of Samarra.
Sgt. Louis A. Griese, 30, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., was an infantryman assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in November 1996 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2003. He previously served with 2nd Brigade here from January 2000 until March 2002.
Griese's awards and decorations include: Army Achievement Medal (5 awards); Army Good Conduct Medal (3 awards); National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on terrorism Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantryman Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Air Assault Badge; and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert.
Griese is survived by his wife and daughter, Stephanie and Skylar, of Fort Campbell; and his mother, Susan, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.
A memorial service for the fallen Soldier will be held in Iraq. Fort Campbell holds monthly Eagle Remembrance Ceremony the second Wednesday of each month.
